In the middle of a densely-packed city, carrying out a major construction project is always a unique challenge.  It requires a solid traffic management plan to ensure the smooth flow of movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic through the city remains safe and maintained. When the Rockefeller University Hospital was being built in New York, sections of the building had to be constructed as far away as New Jersey, then carefully shipped over the ocean via barges to NYC. Not only did construction in a high traffic area need to take place without disruption, but massive, dangerous pieces of heavy material had to be carefully moved from the New York City oceanfront to the middle of the city-proper. As hospital patients and staff waited for the completed construction of the room they needed to receive and provide life-saving care, Traffic Safety Service undertook the meticulous detail behind the transfer, traffic control, and security of both project workers and community bystanders.

Traffic Safety Service worked with multiple construction companies to deal with the many traffic conditions and concerns surrounding such a sensitive project. The Rockefeller University Hospital required a unique horizontal expansion over the FDR Drive. The FDR Drive sees a considerable amount of traffic regularly, so it became essential that the traffic is controlled for motorist and pedestrian’s safety as well as the safety of the contractors working on this complex project.

Why Did the Project Need Traffic Control Plans?

Any project that can potentially cause traffic disruption must provide a proper traffic control plan to move forward. If a curb needs to be removed or a construction site set up next to a major roadway, it takes a meticulously developed control plan that needs to be reviewed, approved, and validated by the local authorities with the proper paperwork. Once approved, construction work can be carried out with the assurance that the people commuting around the site are safe and secure with minimal impact to traffic.

“The engineering involved for the Rockefeller University project was amazing” stated Mike Pecoraro, Chief Operating Officer of Traffic Safety Service, during a recent interview. “Traffic Safety Service provided a safe work zone set up of traffic control devices and Maintenance & Protection of Traffic “MPT” to let our customers focus on their job in a safe work zone. Our customers can not start their work until we complete ours. That is why efficiency and safety during the setup, continued maintenance in the work zone and break down is paramount.”

At Traffic Safety Service, LLC, we successfully managed and implemented lane closure and traffic control to ensure everything flowed smoothly during the project. Our team planned and organized the entire traffic control process to ensure people on FDR Drive were not impacted by construction. Under our supervision, this project ran smoothly and finished on schedule. At Traffic Safety Service LLC, we pride ourselves on being able to provide safe environments 24/7/365. Since 1971, we are proud to be an American company that will continue to serve communities for years to come.
